THEMATIC MAPS AND GIS TECHNIQUES IN LANDSLIDE HAZARD MITIGATION. A CASE STUDY IN THIRA ISLAND (GREECE)

Landslides as other Natural Hazards pose a serious problem in sustainable development. The use of GIS in providing digital maps can help in the evaluation and mitigation of potential landslide hazards.

Within this context, a case study from an area in Santorini (Thira) island in Greece is presented. In this study, the application of GIS techniques on geological, geotechnical and morphometric data led to the creation of thematic maps regarding landslide susceptibility zonation which in turn can be used in selecting the appropriate measures for the landslide hazard mitigation. The landslide susceptibility analysis was based on engineering geological parameters of the geological formations of the area derived by field work and remote sensing techniques in addition to geomorphological parameters derived from the digital elevation model (DTM). In the provided thematic maps landslide susceptible areas are delinated as well as the relative areas affected. These maps can help in mitigating, induced by seismicity or meteorological phenomena, landslide hazard in the area.
